The difficult funding climate at NIH and other agencies has translated into lost grants and delayed funding for many individuals. This situation has brought to forefront the issue of “bridge funding” to provide support for faculty salaries and their laboratories when there is a hiatus in grant funding. Some members have inquired about how “bridge funding” is handled at different institutions. We thought it might be of interest to collect some data on this issue and share it with all members.

1. Does your institution/department have a written policy that applies to bridging faculty salaries and research programs when grant funding is interrupted?
_____Yes _____No

2. Is bridge funding provided for just the faculty member's salary or is there also support for the laboratory?
____Faculty member's salary only
____Faculty member's salary and support for laboratory

3. If bridge funding is provided for the faculty member's salary:
    A) Is it for the full salary?
    ____Yes _____No

    B) Is there a formula to determine the length and duration of support or is support considered on an individual basis at the discretion of the Chair and/or Dean's office?

    ____Number of funded years
    ____Total dollars received in funding
    ____Combination of these factors
    ____Other (please specify: _____________________)

    D) How many years does support continue and at what percent? (If a formal policy does not exist, please estimate the average support a full professor with a 15 year history of external funding might receive.)
    < 1 year  @_____%
    year 1     @_____%
    year 2     @_____%
    year 3     @_____%
    > 3 years @_____%

    E) Is there a minimum salary for tenured faculty member that is protected regardless of grant funding status?
    _____Yes ______No

If yes, approximately what percent of full salary is the protected amount?
    ______%

4. If bridge funding is provided for the faculty member’s laboratory:
    A) Is there a formula to determine the length and duration of support or is support considered on an individual basis at the discretion of the Chair and/or Dean's office?
    ______Formula
    ______Discretion of Chair/Dean's office

    B) How many years does support continue and at what percent of the laboratory's previous funding level?
    < 1 year   @_____%
    year 1     @_____%
    year 2     @_____%
    year 3     @_____%
    > 3 years @_____%

5. What is the source of funding for salary/laboratory bridge funding:
______ Department
_______Dean's Office
_______Combination
_______Other (please specify: ___________________________)

6. For a faculty member who has received bridge funding, are there associated expectations, such as partially paying it back from future funds.
____Yes ___ No

7. What percent of your faculty are currently (or soon to be) bridged?
______ %

8. Are faculty/departments contributing to a bridge funding pool?
____Yes _____No

If yes, approximately how much?
Department: $_______/year
Faculty member: $_________/year
