Visiting Faculty Positions for Medical Physiology

The University of Medicine and Health Sciences is a new medical school located on the island of St. Kitts in the West Indies. The charter class is 22 students. The department of physiology is recruiting visiting faculty for the following topics and dates:
Cardiovascular: June 29 – August 8, 2008
Cell/muscle:     September 8 – 20, 2008
GI:                   October 6 – 23, 2008
Endo/Repro:     Nov 11 – 28, 2008

UMHS-St. Kitts will provide RT airfare, lodging, $1000 per week plus $500 for incidental expenses. Lodging is at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/skbrb-st-kitts-marriott-resort-and-the-royal-beach-casino/). St. Kitts has non-stop flights from New York City (JFK), Atlanta, Charlotte, and Miami. Other flights connect in San Juan.

The physiology curriculum includes weekly laboratories, clinical correlations, and problem based learning. Visiting faculty are welcome to participate in these activities but the primary activity will be giving 2 lectures per day on Mon – Thur. The Department of Physiology at Dartmouth Medical School invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the level of Assistant Professor. Faculty members in the Department of Physiology have established research programs in areas broadly defined as neuroscience, endocrinology, immunology, respiratory control, cardiovascular and renal physiology. We seek a person interested in the Neurobiology of the Control of the Cardiovascular and/or Respiratory Systems. Individuals holding a Ph.D. and/or M.D., or equivalent degrees, with postdoctoral experience and using innovative combinations of molecular, genetic, cellular and systems approaches are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have demonstrated excellence in research and the potential for securing and sustaining independent and collaborative extramural funding. We expect a commitment to teaching in the Cardiovascular and/or Respiratory section of the medical school year-one course in Physiology and in the graduate school curriculum. UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT COLLEGE OF MEDICINE
SENIOR ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR MEDICAL EDUCATION

The Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education reports directly to the Dean and has a broad range of responsibilities briefly outlined below. The candidate should be a successful educator with excellent leadership and management skills, and be capable of working with a diverse group of stakeholders.
1) Goal: Ensure, and continue to advance, the quality of medical education at the University of Vermont College of Medicine (COM)
    a) Continually update and improve the Vermont Integrated Curriculum (VIC) as appropriate to maintain the best curriculum possible
    b) Continue to develop COMET, the online curriculum and assessment interface of the VIC
    c) Continue to advance the quality of, and reputation for, primary care education at the COM
    d) Develop a simulation program to complement our standardized patient program
    e) Enroll the best, brightest, motivated, caring and diverse student body possible
    f) Assure the best outcomes possible, quantitatively and qualitatively, for our students
    g) Increase the scholarship by our educators
2) Direct Responsibility
    a) Supervise admissions, student affairs, curriculum, and all other areas primarily concerned with undergraduate Medical Education
        i) Choose the administrative structure and personnel best suited to fulfill these functions
    b) Manage the budget for medical student education
        i) Update as appropriate the formula for allocating funds for teaching to the departments
        ii) Develop policies for allocating scholarships and subsidized educational loans to achieve the desired composition of the student body
        iii) Manage medical student enrollment (including admissions, transfers, leaves, and remediation) to ensure a stable number of students across the 4 years of the curriculum
    c) Manage the educational relationships with the COM’s affiliated teaching hospitals
3) Chair the Instructional Improvement Committee for the VIC
4) Develop and Chair an Education Committee comprised of the leaders of Medical Education, Graduate Education, Graduate Medical Education and Continuing Medical Education
5) Evaluate the effectiveness of the COMET Program and its Director.
6) Shared Responsibility
    a) Work with the Department Chairs and VIC Level and Course Directors to assure teaching is of the highest quality
    b) Work with the Dean of the COM and the Department Chairs to ensure availability of qualified faculty to teach basic and clinical sciences
    c) Work with the Associate Dean for Faculty and Staff Development and Diversity to assure the recruitment of a diverse staff and student body
    d) Work with the Development Office to raise and steward philanthropic support of student educational expenses
    e) Work with the Associate Dean for Finance and Administration to manage COMET resources

SENIOR ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR RESEARCH

I. Goal: Grow the Quantity and Quality of Research performed by the Faculty of the College of Medicine
    A. Increase Direct and Indirect external research funding
    B. Increase the number of faculty in the most prestigious national/international research societies
    C. Increase the number of faculty on NIH study sections
II. Methods
    A. Direct Responsibility
        1. Allocate research space, budgeted start-up, bridge, and salary funding, and support for core facilities and programs based on best data on current, and best judgment of future, research productivity
        2. Work with Department Chairs, Center Directors, other colleges, and the Vice President for Research to build interdisciplinary research programs which are synergistic
            a) e.g., Work with the CCTS Director to assure research growth and eventual CTSA status
            b) Work with the Director and Department Chairs to assure success of the Vermont Cancer Center
        3. Develop alternative sources of research funding such as foundations, corporations and government
        4. Supervise construction of new research space, e.g., Colchester and Given Courtyard and Backfill
        5. Assure that all tenure-track hires are aligned with the research priorities of the College of Medicine
        6. Supervise graduate (MS/PhD) education for the College of Medicine
    B. Direct Reports
        1. Technology Transfer
        2. Physical Plant
        3. College of Medicine Center Directors not reporting to the Provost or a Department Chair
    C. Shared Responsibility
        1. Advise the Dean on all research budgets and investments
        2. Work with the Principle Business Officer to assure that spending on start-up, bridge, and salary stay within budget
        3. Work with the Associate Dean for Diversity to assure recruitment and retention of the most diverse scientists and staff possible
        4. Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Faculty and Staff Development to assure that junior tenure-track faculty have good mentorship determined prior to hire and that this mentorship continues after hire
        5. Collaborate with Department Chairs and the Associate Dean for Faculty Development to assure that there is an annual evaluation of the research productivity of all tenure and research track faculty which is as objective as possible, is part of the faculty member’s annual review, and is shared with the faculty member
        6. Collaborate with the individuals responsible for PhD Education to assure that such programs are aligned with the research priorities of the college and that such students are assigned to well-qualified investigators
        7. Collaborate with the UVM Veterinarian to assure that the research needs of the faculty of the College of Medicine are met and that the faculty of the College of Medicine cooperates in the maintenance of certification of the Laboratory Animal Facility
