Postdoctoral Positions in Steroid Hormone Interaction
Life Sciences Institute
University of British Columbia

Postdoctoral positions are available immediately in the laboratory of Dr. Geoffrey Hammond within the Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences at the Life Sciences Institute (www.lsi.ubc.ca), The University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.

Dr. Hammond’s research program focuses on mechanisms of steroid hormone action. Steroid hormones control a wide range of normal biological processes but are also implicated in several disease processes including reproductive disorders, inflammation, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hormone-dependent cancers of male and female reproductive tissues. Synthetic steroids that act as agonists or antagonists are also used widely as pharmacologic agents. In particular, Dr. Hammond’s research programs explore how the access of steroids to tissues and specific cell types is controlled by two high-affinity steroid-binding proteins in the blood, i.e., corticosteroid binding globulin (CBG) and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) which bind the main anti-inflammatory steroids and sex steroids, respectively.

By applying a combination of molecular and cell biological technologies, together with advanced biochemical and physiological approaches, Dr. Hammond’s group has gained new information about how CBG and SHBG are produced and function with respect to normal development and aging, and how they are involved in disease processes. To accomplish these objectives, this multi-disciplinary research program has also involved close interactions with clinical researchers, computational biologists and drug discovery experts. The research has broad implications for human health and provides opportunities for fundamental discoveries in the life sciences, and provides a rich trans-disciplinary research environment where young scientists can reach their full potential.

Candidates must have recently completed a PhD and have a demonstrated publication record of first-author contributions in one or more relevant scientific fields, protein structure/function determinations, molecular and cell biology technologies, high throughput genetic analyses, and whole animal physiology using transgenic mouse models. Successful candidates will have exceptional skills in critical thinking, oral and written communication, initiative, independence and work ethic.

Applicants should submit letters of application to Geoffrey L. Hammond, Ph.D., together with a current CV and a statement of career goals, and must arrange for three letters of reference to be submitted separately to geoffrey.hammond@ubc.ca. This search will be open until March 1st, 2013, but candidates will be evaluated as soon as applications are received. (posted 12/20/2012)

Drexel University College of Medicine

The Department of Pharmacology and Physiology is recruiting to fill a full-time faculty educator position for a Course Director of Medical Physiology. Drexel University College of Medicine supports two curricular tracks for the first two years of undergraduate medical education with a total of 260 students in each year. The Program for Integrated Learning (PIL) is a problem-based learning track with ~25% of the incoming class. The Interdisciplinary Foundations of Medicine (IFM) track is an integrated didactic curriculum that incorporates many small group activities and clinical experiences. This position requires the coordination and oversight of the Medical Physiology curriculum for medical students during their first year in both curricular tracts. In addition, it is anticipated that this individual will also contribute to the Graduate Program in Physiology.

Candidates for this position must have a strong background and expertise in all aspects of the discipline of Medical Physiology and should be able to assume a significant portion of the teaching responsibilities. Experience teaching medical students is required and preference will be given to candidates with extensive experience with this background. The Course Director will also be expected to work with faculty in the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology and with clinical faculty in other Departments to ensure appropriate thematic and topical coverage. This individual will be expected to work in a highly collaborative environment with other course directors, staff and administrators to ensure integration of the curriculum across disciplines. Participation and support of the post-baccalaureate pre-med courses offered by the medical school are also included as responsibilities of the individual filling this position.

In addition this individual should have strong teaching/presentation skills, organizational skills with attention to detail, excellent communication skills, ability to collaborate in interdisciplinary teams, and adapt to the needs of the medical school. The candidate is not expected to participate in laboratory-based research, as this is a full-time educator position, but research related to academic and educational areas such as using the College of Medicine’s Independence Blue Cross Medical Simulation Center or in the development of novel approaches to education is encouraged. The academic rank of the position is open but a preference is for experienced academic teachers in medical school. The position is available immediately.

Drexel University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and is proactively committed to diversity and inclusion in all of its policies, practices and services. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to the varied diversity and excellence of the academic community, and all of its complements. Chair Positions

Chair, Department of Cellular & Molecular Physiology
Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine

The College of Medicine (COM) of the Pennsylvania State University invites applications and nominations of outstanding candidates for the Chair of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology (CMP). This department has had an exceptional record of achievement and excellence. Since the COM was formed there have been only 2 chairs: Howard Morgan and Leonard Jefferson, who will step down after 23 years of distinguished leadership. Under their leadership, this department has made numerous fundamental scientific contributions. The department has nearly $8 million of extramural research support/year with more than $300,000 of grant support per tenured faculty member. The new chair will be asked to build upon this record of achievement by recruiting a cadre of talented scientists and by expanding collaborations with other departments and institutes within the COM and the University. In addition to directing the research program, the new Chair will embrace the educational mission of the COM. This will include playing a leadership role in educating superior medical and graduate students. The successful candidate will be an internationally recognized scientist with a record of sustained grant support and will have leadership experience in an academic department or institute. CMP is part of a large, vibrant and fiscally stable academic health center which includes the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, the NIH-funded Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute, a Heart and Vascular Institute (PSHVI), and a Cancer Institute. For more information regarding this outstanding leadership opportunity, please visit http://med.psu.edu/web/physiology/home. Please send nominations or applications (including cover letter and curriculum vitae) to the attention of Trisha Chogich at Alexander, Wollman and Stark. Electronic applications are strongly preferred and should be sent to alexwollstark@verizon.net and addressed to either Harry Wollman MD or Trisha Chogich, Alexander, Wollman & Stark, 141 Lydia Lane, West Chester, PA 19382; Phone: 484-367-7479; Fax: 610-399-5285.
